GRANITE ART

Carved in stone

We use 100% natural granite approximately 10mm to 15mm thick, always of very tight grain structure. It’s been around for about four billion years in its natural state so it’s safe to say it’s hardwearing. Equally, the resins used to bond the different materials together are the same as those used on headstones, so they can withstand pretty much anything the elements can throw at them. The colour range is mainly black through to white and any shade in between, although the use of marble can provide a different choice of colours and textures; the surface can be rough or smooth, depending on preference.

We use a water jet cutting machine that cuts the stone with an extremely high water pressure of 50,000psi with a grit compound. Once the different materials have been cut and inlaid within one another they are bonded with resin and the face is smoothed using specialised grinding equipment.

Finally the front face is polished using differing grinding pads to produce a glass-like finish. A rough finish can be engineered if required. The finished product is like a stick of rock in that the colour and texture goes through from front to back. This allows for re-polishing in years to come, if the surface is scratched or dulled for any reason .
